COVINGTON -- Two teens were killed and one critically injured in a single car crash on Almon Road on Saturday evening, according to the Newton County Sheriff's Office and the Georgia State Patrol.
Dead at the scene were Tony Lamar Horton Jr., 18, and Montavius Sorrells, 19, both of Covington. The driver Demario Horton, 19, was air lifted to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta where he remains in critical condition.
GSP spokesman Gordy Wright said about 6:14 p.m. a Chevrolet Impala was traveling northbound on Almon Road near Neely Hammond Road when the crash occurred.
"(He) lost control in the curve and left the roadway, sideswiped a tree with the right side of the vehicle which caused it to rotate and then strike a tree with the left side of the vehicle," Wright said.
NCSO spokesman Anthony Washington said Sorrells was the rear seat passenger and he was ejected from the vehicle. The 18-year-old Horton was the front seat passenger.
Wright said that speed was a contributing factor in the crash and that the GSP Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team was investigating further into the crash. Results of toxicology testing is pending.
"Any charges would be made once the SCRT investigation is complete," Wright said.
