COVINGTON Let the music play!
On Thursday, the annual Concerts On The Square series kicks off.
The free series is sponsored by the Arts Association of Newton County and United Bank of Covington.
At noon each Thursday in May, the public is invited to take a break and enjoy the sounds of local musicians performing at the Square in Covington.
"This year we have four very different artists who will be performing and can appeal to just about everybody," said Buncie Lanners, executive director of the Arts Association.
The first concert on Thursday will feature performances by the Eastside High School Band and the High School Honors Band, which includes band members from Eastside, Newton and Alcovy high schools. Lanners said bands from each of the county's high schools are invited on a rotating basis to play every year. This year will also feature a performance by the Honors Band.
Others on tap for the month are: Latino performer Jorge Alvarez on May 13; the Blues from the Bryant Brothers Band on May 20; and the jazz sounds of the John Scott Quartet on May 27.
In the event of rain, the concerts will be held in the Board Room at the Historic Courthouse.
