Mainstay Academy is part of the Georgia Network for Educational and Therapeutic Supports that serves students with severe emotional behavior disabilities.
GNETS is a state-funded program serving students in Newton, Spalding, Butts, Pike, Lamar, Upson and Fayette counties. The main center is in Griffin with outposts in Newton, Henry, Butts and Fayette. Mainstay Academy in Covington currently serves 26 Newton County students.
The academy recently launched a fund-raising campaign to fund field trips this spring. The campaign was organized due to the current budget cuts and lack of funding in the GNETS budget to cover the cost of field trips.
The students have expressed an interest in going to Sky Hike at Stone Mountain. The total cost for this trip will be $550, which will cover the cost of admission, a school bus and the hourly cost for the bus driver.
The school, which is located at 3124 Sharp Field Drive in Covington, can be reached by calling 770-385-6878.
