RCPS gearing up for annual arts show

CONYERS -- Hundreds of Rockdale County students get to show off their artwork this month.

Rockdale County Public Schools is holding its annual Visual Arts Show starting Monday at the Olde Town Gallery, which is located at 909 Commercial St. in Conyers.

"It's a wide spectrum of 2-dimensional work and 3-dimensional work of different mediums and subject matters," said Katy King, an art teacher at Davis Middle School and one of the event organizers, along with Shoal Creek Elementary School art teacher Mollie Spardello and Heritage High School art teacher Les Mosley.

Earlier this school year, qualified artists selected pieces of art that middle and high school students had worked on as a classroom assignment or on their own time to be part of the exhibit, and teachers chose elementary artwork that students completed in class to be part of the show.

"We have paintings, drawings, sculptures, collages -- all kinds of things," King said.

This is at least the 11th year that RCPS has held the arts show and the second year it has been held at the Olde Town Gallery.

"It's definitely a true place to showcase our student artwork," King said. "It gives us a proper place to show it."

She said the schools are very appreciative that gallery director Coyle Justman and assistant director Andrea Bowen have donated their space for RCPS students.

"Please come out and support the artistic achievements of RCPS students and visual arts teachers," King said, adding that the event coincides with Youth Art Month this month.

The opening reception for the arts show is scheduled from 6 to 10 p.m. Monday at the gallery. There, guests can meet the artists and look at the various pieces of art. King encourages parents, RCPS staff members, students and other community members to visit the exhibit on opening night or during its run at the gallery.

The art exhibit will held at the Olde Town Gallery until March 27. The gallery's hours are 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., Tuesday through Fridays, and noon to 5 p.m. on Saturdays.
