COVINGTON -- The Covington Fire Department has identified the victim of a fire on Capes Drive on Friday afternoon as 64-year-old Jerry Allen Smith.
According to CFD Capt. Rob Christopher, Smith was found dead in a chair in the living room of the duplex at 8164 Capes Drive about 3 p.m.
Christopher said a neighbor called and reported that smoke was coming from Smith's residence.
"We arrived and found light smoke coming from the unit. Firefighters made entry and found the victim in the front room. They extinguished the fire which was mainly confined to that room," he said.
Coroner Tommy Davis said the cause of death has not been determined, pending the results of toxicology tests.
"When the autopsy report is completed with toxicology results, we will be able to determine what direction the investigation takes," Christopher said, adding that the origin and cause of the fire was also undetermined and still under investigation.
