Deadline for liberal arts school nears

COVINGTON -- Newton County students interested in attending the Academy of Liberal Arts at Newton High School have less than two weeks to turn in their completed applications.

Students at any Newton County School System high school must apply to the academy, which started this school year, by March 19.

"We are extremely excited about the success of the Academy of Liberal Arts this year," said school Principal Roderick Sams. "The performance of our students thus far has exceeded our expectations, especially for a first year program."

The program, which was developed by Sams and the school council, is set up as a school within a school in which enrolled students take advanced courses and academic electives.

"With continued support from Oxford College of Emory University, our ALANHS students will continue to receive enrichment opportunities that will better prepare them for the post-secondary school of their choice," Sams said.

Also this year, students in the program will experience more educational travel opportunities, have more academic teams like literary and debate clubs and be exposed to more research opportunities with Oxford College students.

Students interested in applying to the program must complete an application, which must include a copy of their resume, an official school transcript, two academic teacher recommendations and a writing sample that describes what part of the program is appealing and more about their future.

The school plans to mail invitation and qualification letters to applicants on March 30, and contracts and final grades are due by June 15; final welcome letters will be mailed by June 30.

The program expects to hold a special summer institute this July.

ALANHS students must maintain an overall 85 average in ALANHS and other regular classes for each semester to remain in the program.

An application package and more information about ALANHS is available at the school or by visiting www.newtoncountyschools.org/newtonhigh/liberal_arts.htm.
