Duplex fire kills resident

COVINGTON --A 65-year-old man who lived alone in a duplex at 8164 Capes Drive died Friday afternoon as a result of a house fire that started in his living room.

Capt. Rob Christopher of the Covington Fire Department said the man's identity had not been released pending further investigation of the incident. Christopher said the victim's body had been sent to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Crime Lab in Atlanta for an autopsy.

Christopher said the victim's neighbor on the other side of the duplex reported the fire about 3 p.m.

"It was called in by a neighbor in the duplex who said there was smoke coming from the duplex on the other side and coming into his side of the duplex," Christopher said.

The fire was contained to the living room of the victim's home, Christopher said. The cause is still under investigation.

"There was considerable fire damage in the living room and smoke damage in the living room and the hallway of the duplex," he said.

No damages were reported in the neighboring unit.

Covington's last fire death occurred in 2008; prior to that, the Fire Department had not had a fire fatality for 22 years, Christopher said.
