COVINGTON -- The Georgia Heartland Woman's Club will host the 19th annual Cherry Blossom Charity Croquet Tournament on March 20 at Legion Field on Mill Street in Covington.
Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. Those who wish to practice or partake of the continental breakfast may arrive at 9 a.m. Play begins at 10 a.m.
The entry fee is $50 per player with proceeds to benefit Covington YMCA, Project ReNeWal and Newton County Habitat for Humanity.
Up to 64 teams of two players will compete in a round robin format. The competition is limited to casual and novice players of golf croquet.
"It's an easy and quick game to learn. It's not like your backyard game of croquet," said Debby Vanderbunt, co-president of the Georgia Heartland Woman's Club.
"We have 70-year-olds playing, we have teenagers playing. It's a game that does not age," she said.
Contestants will be served breakfast and lunch. Prizes will be awarded to winners and to the best-dressed participants.
"Usually everybody comes in white or khaki," Vanderbunt noted.
Ad contributions are being solicited for the event. Businesses that advertise in the tournament program may be eligible to receive free entries. The program includes a history of the tournament, the schedule of play and the rules of play and etiquette. Ads range from $25 to $500.
Contributions of $250 or more include two free entries and a court sponsorship. Ad contributions of $150 or more include two free entries and those of $100 or more include one free entry. The deadline to purchase ads is March 12.
