COVINGTON — The Governmental Affairs Committee of the Covington-Newton County Chamber of Commerce will host a forum featuring Board of Education and Board of Commissioners candidates in the primary election from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, July 8, at the Newton County Library at 7116 Floyd St.
"The purpose, as a Chamber, we feel like, is providing the opportunity to get to know the candidates because there are so many," said Chamber Office Manager Sherri Dudley.
All candidates running for Board of Education seats 1, 3 and 5 and Board of Commissioner districts 2 and 4 have been invited to attend.
Candidates for Board of Education will be asked the following question: "How do you anticipate, with state and local revenue reductions, how you will balance the budget if elected to the Board of Education?"
Candidates for Board of Commissioners will be asked: "How do you see the roles between the Chamber and the Board of Commissioners in regards to future economic development efforts for Newton County?"
The forum will then be opened for questions from the audience. The questions should be written on an index card and submitted to Chamber staff upon entering the forum and will be read by the moderator, Danny Stone, chairman of the Governmental Affairs Committee.
A brief biography of each candidate will be provided in a program to be handed out at the forum.
The primary election takes place July 20. Early voting is under way at the Newton County Board of Elections Office, located in the Newton County Administration Building at 1113 Usher St.
