"As an unemployed teacher I would like to know the qualifications that are required to be the Main Street director. The $62,000 salary would be a welcome pay increase. Not having anyone (such as the mayor and City Council) that knows what your job is or if you are actually doing it would relieve a lot of pressure. Last but not least, how much vacation times comes with this position?"

"Solution to politicians' peccadilloes -- neuter the whole bunch of them! The Chinese led the way years ago. What are those five piles of rocks at I-20 and 138, more stimulus funds at work?"

"If the county is going to lay off employees, they should start with those employees who do not live, vote and pay taxes in Newton County. Certainly the county commissioner's will look out for the welfare of those employees that work, live and pay taxes in this county, those employees that voted them into office."

"Let's talk TV. Today on TV you can see beautiful young girls who can't act but they do look pretty and I know many people like that. There are also Neanderthals who beat each other brutally and it is called fighting. Looks more like street fighting. I know several people who love this so more power to them. Then there is the language and the shows. The language leaves a lot to be desired and some of the shows are what use to be called soft porn. In fact, many of them should be X-rated. I guess some people like that so I can't complain about them. And then there are sports. I am not a sports fan. I was leaning toward golf with Tiger, but he is no longer a good example. There seems to be too many overpaid prima donnas in sports today. ... Now let's take the newscasters. Too many of them are trying to make the news instead of reporting it. They can have an opinion but it should not be one-sided in a newscast. There are some good shows on TV. I can get 120 stations, which are reruns after reruns after reruns. ... So here is my beef. Even if the shows are new, and I try them and find them lacking, I don't watch them. Now the real problem is, why do I have to pay for sports or other show I don't watch? I don't have a choice. ... "Tim Fleming lives in the city limits. Did you forget the controversy surrounding his last-minute address change? Small business owners are just that. Mom and Pop stores have been the victim of 'big' business for some time now. Quit with the 'I care about small business owners' crap. We all would like more restaurants and most would agree to the commercial retailers. Dare we talk about past commissioners that have prospered with certain zoning changes. Past commissioners who became major land developers and residential builders ... Mort get real! It is time we quit this pity party bull crap. Fact is not one of you will lose any sleep over this budget. Not one of you will lose your home. Not one of you will worry about what to feed your family. This tonight was a battle of loud, pompous stuffed shirts throwing down empty words. Cathy and Nancy stand back and let the men fight it out. But remember when you close your eyes that you can sleep better knowing that public safety as a whole is on duty and we will come no matter where you are. Mort, Tim, Ernie and J.C., ... bad form!"

"When a business or a household has a reduction in their income, adjustments are made to lower their expenses. Why is it when our county's income is reduced, they just raise the tax rate and keep on going business as usual? We need government to learn fiscal responsibility."

"Thank you to the county commissioners for not increasing the funding for Main Street. It was an embarrassment for the mayor and City Council to pass a pay raise and increase a trivial department in this economy. Since this department is funded by our tax dollars -- city and county -- there should be a public disclosure of how the money is being spent and what we are receiving in return."

Editor's note: The Covington City Council did not approve a pay raise increase for the Main Street director.

"This is about the Turner Lake Road project. Yes, there were a few traffic problems at certain times of the day but nothing that two turning lanes and a turn arrow wouldn't have corrected. Instead someone came up with the idea for a roundabout. Did anyone really ask the people that this is truly affecting what they wanted? The ones who live on the back side of all this along Brown Bridge Road all agree that this is a huge and unwanted expense. The traffic issues that this is creating are totally insane, not to mention what it will cost their neighborhood when all is said and done. The two gas stations at the intersection of Turner Lake and Brown Bridge will no longer be there because they now have no business. I work at one of these stations and business is maybe a third of what it was before the road was closed. There is no way we can survive six months like this. Two turn lanes and turn arrows would not have taken near as much time or money to put in. Then they could have taken some of that money to pay for a coach for the middle schools. Instead we get a roundabout that nobody wants, two business owners will loose their business and six more people get to be on the unemployment line. When we elected these people into office, we really thought they would look out for us and at least take our wants and needs into consideration when making decisions like this. I assure you, we will not make the same mistake twice."
