COVINGTON -- Former Newton County Board of Commissioners Chairman Roy Varner died Thursday following a recent illness.
Varner served four terms as chairman, from 1977 to 1992. He was responsible for construction of the county's drinking water reservoir, Lake Varner, and was instrumental in Newton County's industrial growth during the 1980s, helping to bring General Mills and other industries to Newton.
Arrangements are being handled by Harwell Funeral Home and details were not available as of press time. For more in-depth coverage, see Saturday's Citizen.
