COVINGTON -- A welcome home celebration for soldiers with Company B 1/121st Infantry of the Georgia Army National Guard's 48th Brigade is scheduled for Sunday afternoon on the Square in downtown Covington.
The soldiers, based at the Covington National Guard Armory, returned home in March but Sunday's event will be the first time the community at large has the opportunity to extend thanks for their service in Afghanistan.
Soldiers will march from the armory to the Square at 1 p.m. and the public is encouraged to line the route and cheer for their hometown heroes.
At 1:15 p.m., a ceremony will be held on the Square and will include the presentation of colors by the Newton High School JROTC; speeches from military dignitaries and government representatives; and the singing of the National Anthem by Jackie Smith.
Prior to the parade, from 10:30 a.m. until noon, soldiers will be treated to a brunch courtesy of the Church of the Good Shepherd.
Donations of fruit, sausage balls, finger sandwiches and other food items are still being accepted. For more information, call Al Fernety at 770-922-7224 or 404-509-3183.
The troops and their families will also be treated to lunch on Saturday hosted by American Legion Post 32.
