COVINGTON -- A teenager believed to be drowned at Factory Shoals Park was missing at press time Wednesday night, according to the Newton County Sheriff's Office.
According to Public Information Office Cpl. Anthony Washington, three teens were swimming at the park, just below the shoals Wednesday afternoon when one young man attempted to swim across the river. Washington said witnesses reported the teen got into trouble, perhaps entangled, and called for help. A second teen entered the water and he, too, called for help and the third teen was able to assist him out of the water. The two then turned and saw the third teen go under the water and he did not resurface, Washington said.
The Newton County Dive Team was called to the scene, but due to darkness and turbulent weather, they abandoned the search and are set to resume early this morning. Further details were not available.
In other news, the NCSO reports a fatality occurred Wednesday afternoon between 4:30 and 5 p.m. on Conley Ditch Road. According to Public Information Office Cpl. Anthony Washington, a Mazda vehicle trying to navigate a curve hit a Ford F-250 pickup head on. One person was killed and one person was flown by air ambulance to an Atlanta trauma center. The Georgia State Patrol is investigating the crash. No further details were available at press time.
