Covington man charged in post office stabbing

COVINGTON -- The Atlanta Police Department has arrested a Covington man and charged him with aggravated assault in connection with an attack on a postal worker Sunday night.

According to APD Public Information Officer Sgt. Curtis Davenport, officers were called to the Atlanta Postal Center in the 1800 block of James Jackson Parkway about midnight Sunday.

"We were advised a postal supervisor had been attacked with a screwdriver and some type of knife," Davenport said. "When we found the victim, he had several lacerations to both eyes, hands, his left ear and approximately eight puncture wounds to his back."

The victim is a 55-year-old post office supervisor, and Davenport said his injuries were not life-threatening.

Fellow postal worker Claudius Mapp, 42, of 95 Bridle Path Lane, Covington, was arrested on the scene. Mapp is being held without bond.

"The only statement he made as soon as police approached him, he said he did it and nothing else. We don't really know at this time what led to the attack or what kind of problems there might have been at the post office," Davenport said.
