The Newton County Board of Education held its first meeting of the school year last week with some new faces. New NCSS superintendent Gary Mathews, front center, presided over his first regular session meeting last Tuesday. Also beginning on the school board was Greg Proffitt, back center, who is filling the remaining term of District 5 member C.C. Bates. Pictured, from left center, are District 2 board member Eddie Johnson, District 1 member Johnny Smith, District 3 representative and board chair Cathy Dobbs and District 4 representative and vice chair Almond Turner. The three candidates who win the Nov. 2 election will replace Proffitt, Smith and Dobbs in January.
