More than 2,000 ballots cast in early voting

COVINGTON -- Early voting for the primary wrapped up Friday at the Newton County Board of Elections office, with more than 2,000 ballots having been cast.A total of 1,858 votes had been cast in-person at the office as of Friday morning; 1,005 of those were Republican ballots and 853 were Democrat.

Livingston principal resigns after investigation

COVINGTON -- Just three weeks before the new school year is to begin, Livingston Elementary School's principal has announced that she will resign following a state investigation that resulted in the suspension of her educational certificate.

Porterdale approves millage rate increase

PORTERDALE -- The City Council approved a millage rate of 17.518 mills at a called meeting Tuesday night. The new rate encompasses the rollback rate of 13.518 mills plus an additional 4 mills.

Pony Express burglars flee, but are chased down on I-20

COVINGTON -- An early morning burglary at the Pony Express Gas Station on Ga. Highway 11 developed into a three-county chase on Interstate 20, ending with a crash and the apprehension of one suspect, according to the Newton County Sheriff's Office.

Two roads to be closed for repairs

COVINGTON -- Two Newton County roads -- Butler Bridge and Sears roads -- will be temporarily closed next week, according to Newton County Roads Superintendent Robert Griffith.
