"To the person who is complaining about why no one does anything for the western side of Newton County, why should we? It's mostly full of starter homes that don't pay enough in taxes to cover the services they use. It's something we can blame on the commissioners that wanted and want affordable housing here. That side of the county is DeKalb County the 3rd, Rockdale County is Jr. Thank goodness when Aaron Varner was chairman they made it mandatory for 2-acre lots in east Newton, which will hopefully keep the east side of Newton desirable by forcing the developers to build higher-priced homes. If you look at where all of the crime is occurring most of it is in west Newton. People may move here for a better life with intentions of being good citizens of the community, but it's your children, not the parents. No one owes them anything so they shouldn't act like it."

"Fox News? Fair and balanced news? You really need to get your head examined. I can't think of any news organization that is more of the exact opposite of fair and impartial. Do they even have real news casters? No, all they have are political pundits that make a buck off exploiting the political ignorance of pseudo conservatives and feeding sensationalist headlines to gluttonous couch potatoes that would never think of cracking open a book. They pimp out their female newscasters and rely on ratings by using exclamatory and disingenuous headlines. They are the reincarnation of the yellow journalism that was so rampant in the early 1900s and will be viewed as such by historians in the future. You speak of the SSI fund being robbed and Obama care in the same breath yet fail to mention that the SSI funds were diverted and spent by Dubya's administration as well as the squandering of the surplus that Clinton left behind. So, Obamacare is socialism? What a laugh! What do you think SSI is? It's a product of socialist theory. So is the public school system, county heath clinics that perform vaccinations, the subsidization of wheat and corn so that food is cheap and plentiful as well as many other public services that you benefit from. If most of you Fox News junkies had to live in the world that these very same pundits espouse ... you would not make it. Signed: An independent thinker with conservative leanings"

"Darrell Huckaby's editorial regarding the $20 billion fund voluntarily established by BP is erroneous and inflammatory. Huckaby conveniently forgets that the administrator, Kenneth Feinberg, was selected by Bush to administer the 9/11 fund (taxpayer money) and is not a member of the current administration. Perhaps Darrell would like it better if the taxpayer had to pay the compensation as well as the cleanup as we did after 9/ll. Darrell's editorial gets worse and he mocks our democracy within a Republic and the electoral system. The worst part is he surely knows better but chooses to be inflammatory just as Rush, Beck, et al, as it attracts readers and increases their income. If Huckaby is not better informed, he should resign his position teaching high school history."

IS THIS THE ONE THAT ISN'T TRUE?? ( No) Just wondering ... has anyone noticed that the advertised budget for the county and the budget voted on at the meeting was different ... by $300,000. Yep, that's right. ... Check out the published budget and the voted on budget..... Now I will not say which department lost that much money but I will say that there will be a new library completed ... . you pass judgment. (Conyers folks will be so pleased to have this facility at their doorstep with no tax burden). I'm looking at an article in today's paper that lists those who have been laid off. Seems some departments took a pretty big hit while others will probably be only slightly affected. I bet you think department heads make these decisions ... nope! Guess again. ... I ask you, what in Newton County has gotten better since this new administration has come aboard? We have an out of control commission chair who seems to have an agenda and needs to take a step back and see what is happening if she wants to be on board for the next term. Just saying ... "

"Fellow Americans -- what is wrong with this picture? The Department of Justice is rumored to be starting legal action today against the new Arizona law regarding illegal aliens. This law is not even as strict as the federal law in this regard. They have, however, been told to drop any action against the New Black Panther organization for the intimidation of voters in the 2008 election. These actions were recorded on video by persons outside the polling places. This order came from top people in the Justice Department. How could this occur without direct approval and authorization from Obama, our commander in chief? This is a travesty and should show the American people exactly what type of president we have in office. This radical black organization will not be punished for what is a blatant crime. If this had occurred during the Bush election, the intimidating group would already have been arrested, charged, convicted and put under the jail. We must put a STOP to this Left Wing Lunacy. November 2, 2010, is the time for this to happen. We can and must vote the people out who care little for Americans and our freedom. God bless America."

"To those who oppose the roundabout traffic control at Turner Lake, did you realize that the downtown Square is really the same type of traffic design operation? Those of us who have been here a long time know how to drive in this kind of intersection. We've been doing it for years."

"I'd laugh if it wasn't so sad to hear parochial people who have never been outside Georgia whine about the round-about that is being built at Tuner Lake Road and Clark Street. I have driven around roundabouts in Scotland and elsewhere overseas and they work just as they are meant to work, expediting traffic. For those who conjecture that fire trucks and other large trucks won't be able to get through, again, show their ignorance. Do you think the Fire Department in Covington would allow construction of a road they could not navigate? Get real."

"Well guys, here we go. We have contracted Durden's Landscaping one more time. How can we pay $103,000-plus for the grass to be cut when you are sending employees home who would gladly run a mower. Mort's comment about more for less. Let's see less pine straw and mulching, less fertilizing and weed control equals less work equals do I keep going? Every board member voted yes. Billy agreed to keep up two more sites that are less than 1 acre and Mort thinks that's more for less. Do you honestly think that we bought your idiotcracy? One more thought. You pay him as much as the elected officials earn! People who have got to tell people to leave. All he does is cut grass and sleeps well. I will not vote for the current board members anymore. Go cut your grass or is someone else cutting it?"

"Two of our high school seniors graduation banners were stolen from our subdivision July 5th, on Brown bridge Road. Both seniors have accomplished so much! Our neighbors were very sad to learn of the crime. I can only imagine the individuals who stole the banners may have not accomplished anything but theft in their lifetime. You are traveling down the wrong path in life. God knows who you are!"

"As a Newton County taxpayer, I would like to know why we do not employ county workers at the Recycle Centers? I am a single mom that attempted to dump limbs at the Oak Hill Center. The worker ... told me I had to go to the landfill to dump limbs. Which took me five minutes to load up myself. The yard trash bin was totally empty. Then, the worker got close to my face, which was very upsetting. I departed, called the County Landfill number and issued a complaint. I was directed to the supervisor of this contracted company which employs the workers. The supervisor told me to go back and dump the load. I refused and stated I did not feel safe and would not return. The workers always sit under the tree and never offer to assist anyone that may need help. It is understandable, people need work. At least hire workers that are physically able ... and do not intimidate small females. How are our tax dollars allocated to receive such poor service? Makes you wonder with all of the county job cuts in critical areas."

What is wrong with our priorities? The City and County are eliminating jobs and consolidating departments due to lack of funds. Why do they spend $62,000.00 on the Main Street Department?

IS THIS THE ONE THAT ISN'T TRUE?? ( YES) I watched the city council meeting when they ask for a "work shop session" because no one knew the job of Main Street, who was on the Main Street Board, or who the Main Street Director reported to. Since Main Street is paid by tax dollars collected by OUR city and county, will the council or the newspapers print this valuable information when and if it becomes available?

Kudos many times over to the organizers and sponsors of the fabulous band jam last Saturday on the Covington Square! Thanks, Councilman Mike Whatley, musician Mack McKibbon and Main Street director Josephine Kelly for planning and staging such a fun day and night that drew some 1,200-1,500 people. At least one City Council person who didn't vote for the funds to hold this event was seen enjoying the day with his family. If he couldn't support the outlay, he might better have stayed home.

"To all of you cry babies whining about the new roundabout at Turner Lake and Clark, it will be a welcome improvement over the eyesore that has existed for so many decades. The roundabout is a very viable alternative used successfully in cities, counties and countries everywhere. If you cannot negotiate a simple roundabout, you should not be driving."

"My comment is about the teacher who was interested in the job of Main Street director. This weekend pretty much puts the last nail in the coffin for both Main Street ... and the Arts Association. Mac McKibben singlehandedly, along with friends, has clearly shown everyone in Covington and Newton County that ... Main Street and the Arts Association have no clue whatsoever about what the public wants. This Saturday, July 3, 2010, saw the largest crowd ever on the Square in Covington for an event of local talent. Hometown musicians blew the roof off .... If you took all the people who show up for events planned by the Arts Association and Main Street for an entire year, they would not even come close to totaling what Mac McKibben did in one day. ... "

"I was calling about the University of Georgia athletic director. More I hear about that the more I wonder what rock did they get him out from under? He tried to buy his way out of it. Tried to get the law officer to carry him to the hotel. He is a hypocrite. I do not believe that woman was just his friend."

"This is in regard to the Sheriff's Department. Ezell Brown, you are doing such a wonderful, wonderful, wonderful job. I am sorry that the commissioners of this county cannot find the money to support the Newton County Sheriff's Department. Newton County, even though we have the city of Covington, city of Porterdale and all of those other police departments they are still within the county limits, so I believe the county still operates on these streets. Also NCSO has taken over the Mansfield Police Department, they no longer have a Mansfield Police Department, I know because I work in Mansfield. So, please Newton County Commissioners, get over your lazy tails and give NCSO the money they need to hire these deputies back and get off your high horses. If you have to lay some of you off, lay you off."
