Dixie Boys tourneys come back

COVINGTON -- The Dixie Boys Georgia State Championship for 13- and 14-year-olds will begin at City Pond Park on Saturday.

A total of 15 teams, or approximately 240 players and coaches, will be in Covington for the tournament, which is hosted by the Newton County Recreation Commission.

"The members are staying in local hotels, and with the economy the way it is, I'm sure those people are glad to get the business," Recreation Commission Director Tommy Hailey said.

Local teams Newton County All-Stars will play in both age groups. Games begin at 11 a.m. Saturday, with the local teams playing at 8 p.m. There will be no opening ceremonies, but dignitaries will be recognized prior to the evening game. The tournament will run through Thursday.

The Newton County Recreation Commission is a regular host of Dixie Boys tournaments, and hosted the world series in 1993, 1997, 2002 and 2008.

"We get chosen because we have a great facility and a great staff of people. We get good community support," Hailey said.

Admission is $5; children age 6 and under get in free. Tickets are available at the gate. For a full schedule, go to www.newtonrecreation.com or call the Recreation Commission at 770-786-4373. City Pond Park is located at 12239 Williams St. in Covington.
