GBI: Man, 21, found dead in cell

COVINGTON -- A man who checked into the Newton County Work Release facility Friday night was found dead in a cell Saturday morning, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

GBI spokesman John Bankhead said the state agency was called in to investigate the death of 21-year-old Ricky Ricardo Gibbs after jailers found him unresponsive at 9:48 a.m. Saturday.

"911 was called and EMS arrived at the scene, but Gibbs was already dead," Bankhead said.

The work release program is housed at the building formerly used as the Newton County Jail on Stallings Street.

Newton County Coroner Tommy Davis said an autopsy has been conducted and he is awaiting results of toxicology testing.

"The cause and manner of death is still pending at this time," Davis said. "We do not suspect any foul play, but we are still suspending the cause until we get all the results back."

The autopsy was performed Monday at the GBI Crime Lab.

"There were no signs of trauma or any other indications of foul play found during the autopsy," Bankhead said.

The body has been released to Young Funeral Home.
