Police nab two men in kidnapping

COVINGTON -- A DeKalb County kidnapping came to an end in Newton County on Monday afternoon, according to Lt. Mark Mitchell, spokesman for the Newton County Sheriff's Office.

Mitchell said just before 2 p.m. a woman notified 911 that she had been kidnapped from in front of her subdivision in DeKalb County. The woman told dispatchers that she was forced into her vehicle and driven to Delaney Parkway off Crowell Road where she was told to get out of the car. The perpetrators had driven off in her 1995 white Volvo station wagon, the woman said.

Mitchell said the woman, believed to be in her 60s, sustained minor injuries during the incident.

"The distraught female gave emergency dispatch an excellent description of her vehicle and both suspects as they fled the scene," Mitchell said. "An alert sheriff's deputy located the suspect vehicle near Almon Road and Interstate 20."

Mitchell said deputies attempted to stop the vehicle, but the perpetrators refused to stop.

"A vehicle chase ensued east down the Access Road and into the city of Covington. The chase continued through Covington and then north up Alcovy Road where the driver lost control of the vehicle and crashed near Alcovy Road and Interstate 20," Mitchell said.

The passenger was taken into custody, but the driver fled on foot, Mitchell said. He was apprehended by deputies and CPD officers after a brief foot chase.

Passenger Lee Curtiss Swinton, 45, of Hartsville, S.C., was not charged by Newton County authorities, but the driver, Rahim Malik Muhammed-el, 36, of Stone Mountain was charged with fleeing and attempting to elude an officer, obstruction of a law enforcement officer and reckless driving. Both men were turned over to the DeKalb County Police Department to face kidnapping charges.

"(I am) very proud of the excellent work of the patrol deputies and assisting Covington Police officers who apprehended these kidnapping suspects," said Newton County Sheriff Ezell Brown. "(I am) thankful no law enforcement personnel or any citizen of Newton County was hurt during the incident."
