COVINGTON -- A North Carolina man was arrested Saturday night when he showed up at the home of a 13-year-old Newton County girl with whom he allegedly had inappropriate contact through the Internet, according to the Newton County Sheriff's Office.
James Patrick Hartzog, 19, of 590 Pete Mann Road, Brevard, N.C., was arrested and charged with sexual exploitation of a child by obscene telephone contact with a child, sexual exploitation of a child under the Computer/Electronic Pornography Act and enticing a child for indecent purposes.
"We're still waiting for more information from North Carolina and more charges are pending," NCSO Investigator Mark Joyner said.
Joyner said the NCSO was notified by the girl's parents Saturday after they found out there was a plan for the 19-year-old to meet their 13-year-old daughter.
"He came to the victim's house. That's where they had discussed meeting, so we just let him come on," Joyner said, adding that the man arrived about 9:15 p.m. and deputies were waiting for him.
Joyner said the two had begun conversing on MySpace.
"They started talking and there was inappropriate phone calls and other stuff that went on through the computer between him and the victim," Joyner said.
Though law enforcement became involved in this situation before the suspect met with the victim, the investigator said he would caution parents to pay attention to what their children are doing on the Internet and to know who their kids are talking to.
