COVINGTON -- Southern Heartland Arts Association Inc. is offering the experience of a trip to Monte Carlo without ever leaving Covington, and the chance to help a good cause, too.
The association will hold its annual Monte Carlo for the Arts event at 6 p.m. Feb. 6 at the event room at Porterdale Mill Lofts, located at 1109 Main St. in Porterdale.
Proceeds will benefit the nonprofit organization's instructional fund, which pays for scholarships for local students seeking a career in the arts, scholarships for children who attend art camps at Southern Heartland Art Gallery and for events such as the free weekly community paint party held at the gallery, said Susan Wahl, event coordinator. Last year's funds were also used to continue art classes for a talented teenager whose parents could no longer afford to pay, Wahl said.
"The arts are not very high on people's list when it comes to giving and that's understandable," Wahl said, but added that what people often don't realize is that having a thriving cultural base is part of what attracts businesses and industries to a town, as well as tourists.
The event will include a buffet dinner, a live auction and blind auction and games of chance. The auctions will feature such items as trips, dinners and sports memorabilia, fishing trips, rounds of golf and art. Players at games of chance will win play money that can be used for the raffle, as well, which will include donations by local businesses. Entertainment will be provided by an acting troupe.
"This will be an attractive fundraiser for men as well as women," Wahl said.
The cost is $50 per person. To make reservations, call 770-788-8799 or visit Southern Heartland Art Gallery at 1132 Monticello Street Southwest in downtown Covington. For more information, call 770-464-0065.
