Qualifying fees set

COVINGTON -- The Board of Commissioners has set qualifying fees for county offices to be filled in the 2010 general primary and general election.

The qualifying fee for Board of Commissioners districts 2 and 4 is $569.54. For Board of Education districts 1, 3 and 5, the qualifying fee is $216.

The fees are 3 percent of the elected officials' base salary, in accordance with state law.

Qualifying will take place April 26 through noon April 30. The General Primary will take place July 20, with the General Election to follow on Nov. 2.

In other news, commissioners reappointed County Attorney Tommy Craig and County Clerk Jackie Smith.

This will be Craig's 34th year as county attorney.

"I hope I can contribute in some way as the county moves forward toward improvements and toward its betterment," Craig said. He went on to thank county commissioners for their guidance and his staff for their support.

District 3 Commissioner Nancy Schulz asked for a report on legal fees for the first six months of fiscal year 2010 as well as strategies on how the board can save money in that area.

Craig agreed and added that legal fees were reduced $75,000 from 2008 to 2009.

"We'll do everything we can to try to maintain control over the county expenses. We'll do our share to try to help the budget in any way we can," he said.

Smith was first appointed clerk in August 1998. Prior to that, she served as executive secretary to former Chairman Davis Morgan.

She has served as president, vice president, secretary and treasurer for the Association County Clerk's of Georgia and was appointed County Clerk of the Year for Georgia in 2004. She has also served on the Association County Commissioners of Georgia's board of directors.

"I'd like to say thank you for another year of being able to work with the board and the people of the county. Sometimes we have some hard things we go through but we love one another ... and we try to work things out," she said.

Smith said when she was hired she took the attitude that, "If God wanted me here, I wanted to be here. If God doesn't want me here, I don't care to be here and you don't need me to be here. I am happy to tell you I still feel God wants me here."
