Furman Bisher debuts in Citizen

Today, the Citizen newspapers welcome longtime Atlanta sports journalist Furman Bisher to our family of columnists. Although a legendary writer known to just about every sports fan -- especially those in the Southeast -- Bisher reintroduces himself to readers of this newspaper, whom he refers to as his "new friends." Bisher, who calls retirement a "dirty word," will contribute occasional columns to our newspapers.

Among his many accomplishments, the venerable Bisher has been inducted into the Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association Hall of Fame, the Atlanta Sports Hall of Fame, the North Carolina Hall of Fame, the North Carolina Journalism Hall of Fame, the Georgia Golf Hall of Fame, and many others. According to the Sports Writers Hall of Fame Web site, Bisher played golf with Bobby Jones, covered the first NASCAR race and more than 50 Kentucky Derbies, and helped bring the Braves to Atlanta. He is the dean of American sports writers.
