COVINGTON -- Every year in April, thousands join together in Newton County to participate in Relay for Life, the American Cancer Society's primary fundraiser.But the fundraising starts long before the actual event, as participants hold bake sales, beauty pageants and other activities to try and raise as much money as possible.

COVINGTON -- Georgia residents who need a new refrigerator, dishwasher or other appliances, now's the time to buy.Purchases of certain qualified Energy Star appliances on or after Feb. 12 will qualify for a rebate through the Georgia State Energy Efficient Appliance Rebate Program.

PORTERDALE -- What began as a charitable effort at Christmastime to help a needy family in Porterdale has expanded to a year-round program that will assist the needy, as well as help the elderly in the city stay connected and involved with the community.

PORTERDALE -- In addition to looking for a full-time city manager, the Porterdale City Council will also be advertising to fill the city clerk position and a part-time clerical position at City Hall.

State recognizes school nutrition program

COVINGTON -- Newton County students are eating their breakfast.The Georgia Department of Education School Nutrition program recently recognized three Newton County schools for exceeding state averages in breakfast participation during the 2007-08 school year, the most recent year the state has recorded.
