High school seniors invited to college assistance event

CONYERS -- Area high school seniors and their parents can get assistance with college financial aid this weekend.

For the second year, Rockdale County Public Schools is playing host to the region's College Goal Sunday -- a nationwide operation that provides tax assistant and information about the Free Application for Federal Student Aid.

Beginning at 1 p.m. Sunday, they can get free tax assistance at the Rockdale Career Academy, 1064 Culpepper Drive S.W., off Parker Road, in Conyers.

"This service is very exciting because the school system has partnered with United Way, who sought assistance through AARP retired accountants," said Candace Ford, director of Student Support Services at RCPS. "We are extremely grateful to have the support of a giving community."

FAFSA information sessions and workshops are at 2, 3 and 4 p.m. Sunday.

"(The event) is to ensure that all college-bound students have access to an education, and one way to do this is to ensure that everyone has an opportunity to gain assistance with completion of the FAFSA," Ford said. "Applicants are highly encouraged to attend, as their odds of attaining funding are increased the sooner they apply for the monies."

Those attending should visit www.fafsa.ed.gov before the event and obtain a PIN number, or they may do so at Sunday's event. Families also should bring with them their 2009 tax returns, W2 forms and Social Security numbers.

College Goal Sunday isn't only an informational meeting -- students also can enter to win a $250 scholarship through a drawing open for participants.

Officials will provide a Spanish interpreter and child care for children ages 4 through 10.
