COVINGTON -- Miracle League of Newton County is partnering with the National Miracle League in Conyers to host the fifth annual Southern Gospel Benefit Concert, a chance to listen to some inspirational music while helping out a good cause.
The concert will take place at 7 p.m. March 19 at Heritage Hills Baptist Church, located at 2987 Ga. Highway 212 S.W. in Conyers.
Proceeds from the event will be split evenly between the two organizations, with the money received by Miracle League of Newton County to go toward building a baseball field for special-needs children. About $64,000 of the $85,000 needed for construction documents has been raised through donations and grants, according to Tamara Richardson, a consultant for the Miracle League of Newton County, which falls under the umbrella of the Newton County Recreation Commission.
"This is really going to help us close that gap. The location holds 1,000 people, so we're hoping to sell all those tickets," Richardson said.
The entertainment will include gospel performers Gold City; Talley Trio; Jeff and Sheri Easter; and Allison Durham Speer.
William Dobbs and Beaver Manufacturing are helping sponsor the event and sponsors are still being accepted.
"We are sharing the proceeds 50/50 with the national office, so the more people that come out to support it, the sooner we'll get those documents completed and we'll take the next big step in breaking ground to build the Miracle League field," Richardson said, noting that there are more than 2,400 special-needs youth in Newton County who could benefit from the field.
The construction documents are needed before a firm price on the project can be established, but estimates are at $1.7 million for the Miracle League Field as well as two other fields, a picnic and playground area and concession stand and restrooms. The field is planned for City Pond Park, west of the tennis complex.
Tickets for the concert are $24 and can be purchased at Turner Lake Complex, located at 6185 Turner Lake Road in Covington, online at www.MiracleLeague.com or by calling 770-760-1933.
