COVINGTON -- Newton County Sheriff's Office investigators have arrested a retired college professor on sexual exploitation of a child charges.
Frank Evans Thompson Jr., 73, of 141 Torrance Road, Milledgeville was arrested at his home Tuesday. He is being held at the Newton County Detention Center on charges of sexual exploitation of children, violation of the Computer Pornography and Child Exploitation Act of 2007 and electronically furnishing obscene material to a minor.
"Our investigation began in November when he approached and chatted to someone he believed to be a young teen," said Investigator Sharron Stewart, adding that the suspect was, in fact, chatting with a trained investigator acting as a "virtual girl."
Stewart said among the violations committed by Thompson was performing sexual acts in front of a Web cam.
Stewart said Thompson contacted the "virtual girl" through a well-known chat room that is frequented by teens.
According to Stewart, Thompson is retired from Georgia College and State University where he was a science professor. He is married and the father of a grown child.
Stewart said he appeared to be surprised when Newton County authorities knocked on his door and told him he was under arrest for sexual exploitation of children.
Investigators confiscated his computer which will be forensically examined at the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Crime Lab for further evidence in the case, Stewart said.
