COVINGTON -- Beginning Monday, parents can register their children for a chance to get into one of the Newton County School System's prekindergarten classes next school year.
Like last year, each school will hold its own Pre-K registration at a certain time and day.
This year, East Newton, Oak Hill and West Newton elementary schools will hold their registration from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. Monday; Livingston, Palmer-Stone and Mansfield elementary schools' registrations will be from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. Feb. 23; Porterdale, Ficquett and South Salem elementary schools' registration is at 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. Feb. 24; Heard-Mixon and Live Oak elementary schools' is from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. Feb. 25; and Rocky Plains and Middle Ridge's registrations are from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. Monday, March 1.
A translator will be provided at West Newton, Ficquett, South Salem, Live Oak and Middle Ridge elementary schools during registration.
Parents or legal guardians must register their children, who must be 4 years old on or before Sept. 1 for one of the 540 slots at NCSS schools.
Once at the site of their assigned elementary school, they must present the child's birth certificate and social security card, along with two health forms -- immunization record 3231 and eye, ear and dental screening form 3300 if the child is age 4.
Also, they must present two proofs of residence -- an electric, gas, garbage or water bill in the name of the person enrolling the child and a current lease, rental agreement or warranty deed from the purchase of the home.
If the child and its parent lives with another person and doesn't have a proof of address in their name, they also must provide a statement of legal residence or a signed and notarized affidavit, which is available at the Newton County Board of Education on Newton Drive or from the elementary schools. Schools will not accept telephone bills, mortgage payment books, post office addresses, car licenses, credit cards or Medicaid cards as proofs of residence.
If the child doesn't live with one or both parents, the registrant also must present guardianship or custody documents.
Once a child is completely registered, his name will be entered into a lottery drawing for one of the 40 slots at each school. At the lottery, the first 40 names drawn will be enrolled in the Pre-K class, and the remaining will be placed on a waiting list in the order they are drawn.
More Information about Pre-K registration is available at www.newtoncountyschools.org or by calling 770-787-1330, ext. 1262.
