The Covington Elks Lodge 1806 recently conducted their annual Hoop Shoot Contest at the Newton High School gym. It is the first line of competition in the long journey to become the best hoop shooter in the United States.

The participants were divided into three categories according to age: 8-9 year olds, 10-11 year olds and 12-13- year olds.

More than three million kids participate each year in the country.

One boy and one girl in each of the three categories will win a national title in Springfield, Mass.

The program has allowed students to build character while promoting integrity, hard work and good sportsmanship since 1973. It is the largest non-commercial, co-educational sports program in America.

Following the contest, the Elks Lodge held its awards luncheon for students and their families.
