Newton County Sheriff's Office Capt. Doug Kitchens, right, is asking department range master Deputy Wayne Scott a question about a firearm. For residents who have questions about firearms or would like to learn to safely use a gun, the NCSO is offering a series of firearm safety classes.
The classes will consist of two, four-hour blocks on two consecutive Saturday mornings. The first block will consist of classroom instruction at the Newton County Law Enforcement Training Center on Alcovy Road. The second block will include work at the firing range.
Participants must furnish their own gun, be at least 21 years old, have a valid Georgia driver's license, a valid Georgia firearms permit and pass a criminal background check. The first classes will be held from 8 a.m. until noon April 17 and 24.
Those interested can pick up an application at the Administration Area of the Law Enforcement Center from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Fridays. The first 25 people to turn in all required information and qualify will be selected for the class. Other applications will roll over until the next scheduled class.
For more information, call Scott at 678-625-1542 or Training Coordinator Lt. Paul Gunter at 678-625-1444.
