COVINGTON -- Georgia residents who need a new refrigerator, dishwasher or other appliances, now's the time to buy.
Purchases of certain qualified Energy Star appliances on or after Feb. 12 will qualify for a rebate through the Georgia State Energy Efficient Appliance Rebate Program.
Rebates will be given in the form of prepaid Visa cards and range from $25 to $199, depending on the type of appliance.
Georgia was appropriated more than $8.6 million for the rebate program through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. The program will last as long as the money does, and that may be only a few weeks, according to Nicole Graham, senior market analyst with the Municipal Gas Authority of Georgia.
"There are a lot of appliances included in this. We encourage people to go on the Web site or call in and see the status of what's left (of the money)," she said.
MGAG is encouraging residents to purchase tankless water heaters, which are eligible for a $199 rebate, as well as a 2010 federal tax credit in the amount of $1,500.
"This tax credit coupled with a rebate on a tankless water heater gives a customer very big savings," Graham said.
The city of Covington also offers rebates on tankless water heaters and other appliances. For more information, call customer service at 770-385-2000.
"We want people to be aware of it. We want them to do it. That's more money in their pockets they can spend with local merchants or go on a trip," said Utilities Director Bill Meecham of the state and local rebate programs.
The state rebate program will be handled on a first-come, first-served basis.
Georgia residents with a valid Georgia residential address who replace an existing appliance with a new Energy Star qualified appliance are eligible to apply. Purchases made prior to Feb. 12 will not qualify.
The Energy Star logo is featured on the front of products and on product packaging. For a complete list of all Energy Star products and models, visit www.energystar.gov.
Residents may apply for one rebate per appliance category per address for up to $1,200 total in rebates per address. Separate applications must be completed for each product purchased, and receipts are required. Residents must also commit to recycling their old appliances to be eligible for the rebate. Online purchases do not qualify.
