COVINGTON -- A 23-year-old man was shot in the back outside of a home in The Silos subdivision off Brown Bridge Road in the early afternoon Tuesday, according to the Newton County Sheriff's Office.

NCSO spokesman Lt. Tyrone Oliver said a resident of the home at 20 Dogwood Place called 911 and said a man had been shot in the street at the end of the home's driveway.

Oliver said the victim was said to be visiting someone at the residence when an unknown black male knocked on the door.

"He goes outside and talks to the person for a few minutes and then they hear two gunshots," Oliver said. "The victim was struck once below the belt line in the back."

Oliver said the victim was transported to an Atlanta trauma center where he is listed in stable condition.

"His injuries were not life-threatening," Oliver said.

Witnesses at the scene, as well as the victim, told authorities they did not know the identity of the shooter. Oliver said a composite description did emerge of a black male driving a maroon or red SUV, although opinions varied on whether it was a Suburban, Expedition or Tahoe.

The man is described as being approximately 5 feet, 10 inches tall, weighing about 185 pounds with dark skin and a goatee.

"We hope to interview the victim today (Wednesday) and further interview witnesses at the house," Oliver said. "We're also canvassing the neighborhood to ask if anyone saw anything."

At this point, no motive for the shooting has been discovered.
