CONYERS -- Kaiser Permanente said Monday it will open a medical center in Conyers early next year as part of a $4.6 million investment to add two new medical offices in the metro Atlanta area.

The Conyers Medical Office of Kaiser Permanente will be located at 1478 Dogwood Drive adjacent to the AT&T Store and is expected to be open sometime in February, according to a statement released by Kaiser Permanente, the state's largest non-profit health plan group.

The other facility announced will be located in Fayetteville. Both locations are the first for Kaiser Permanente to be located in Rockdale and Fayette counties. In all, Kaiser Permanente operates 27 medical facilities in the metro Atlanta area and serves 230,000 members.

Kaiser Permanente spokeswoman Kerri Hartsfield said the expansion to Rockdale County is a move to better serve its members on the east side of Atlanta.

"By opening a medical office in Conyers, our goal is to make access to our health care providers even more convenient for our members in Rockdale County by reducing their drive time," Hartsfield said in an e-mail response to questions. "We want all of our members to be within a 20-minute drive of a primary care physician, and many of our new medical offices also offer specialties."

The 6,700-square-foot Conyers Medical Office will feature exam and procedure rooms, a laboratory and an on-site pharmacy. Kaiser Permanente is spending $4.6 million at both the Conyers and Fayetteville facilities in interior construction, furniture and medical and IT equipment for the medical offices.

The medical center will provide internal medicine and pediatric services for Kaiser Permanente members at the new locations. Additional specialties may be added. The medical office will have eight to 12 health care professionals on staff and the capacity to serve 10,000 members, according to the statement.

Both the medical centers in Conyers and Fayetteville will be served by physicians of The Southeast Permanente Medical Group.

Kaiser Permanente opened a 19,000-square-foot medical center in 2007 at 8011 Mall Parkway, near the Mall at Stonecrest.

Kaiser Permanente's Stonecrest Medical Center provides services for adult medicine, pediatrics/adolescent medicine, gynecology, on-site pharmacy, limited lab and radiology services and behavioral health services.

The addition, the Conyers and Fayette medical facilities are part of 10 new medical offices Kaiser Permanente has built recently.

Within the past year, Kaiser Permanente has opened new facilities in Newnan, Snellville, Douglasville, west Marietta, east Cobb, Holly Springs, downtown Decatur and Lawrenceville.
