COVINGTON — Newton County students and staff will get an extended break this month to celebrate the holidays.
Starting Monday and continuing until Jan. 4, students and many staff in the Newton County School System will get a break from school.
Schools will be closed to students and many staff from Monday, Dec. 20, through Monday, Jan. 3. Teachers will report to schools on Jan. 4 for a teacher work day.
The Newton County Board of Education and its administrative offices, which are located at 2109 Newton Drive N.E. in Covington, will be closed from Dec. 20 through 31. The offices will reopen with normal hours on Jan. 3.
The Newton County BOE already held its monthly meeting — it met Tuesday for a combined monthly work session and regular session meeting, which is usually separated into two meetings each month.
Students will report back to their schools on Wednesday, Jan. 5, to complete the remainder of the 2010-11 school year.
The next break for students and staff will be Jan. 17 for the Martin Luther King birthday holiday. Winter break is scheduled for Feb. 16 through 21.
