If you're in search of an affordable gift with a personal touch, it's not too late to visit the Olivia Haydel Senior Center where members are busily working on crafts for the holiday season.
On a recent Tuesday morning, the ceramics room buzzed with activity. Senior citizens painted items such as a Christmas tree, Santa, snowman, vintage car and plant stand.
The items are sold for just few dollars, and the money goes to support the arts and crafts program at Olivia Haydel.
"All of our programs are self-sufficient," said Susan Morgan, manager and assistant director for the center. "It gives everybody buy-in so that they can participate in their program and the maintenance of their program."
This year, the seniors also created necklace and earring sets made of colored beads. About 80 sets remain for purchase.
"We loved it," said Lee Ellsworth about assembling the jewelry.
To purchase a gift item from the Olivia Haydel Senior Center, visit the Senior Site Council Boutique located in the senior center at 1240 Dogwood Drive in Conyers. Staff members will also be happy to lead customers through the ceramics room to view more items.
For those interested in taking advantage of the activities at Olivia Haydel, the center offers classes and recreational activities to residents age 50 and over. Included in the line-up of activities are ceramics, computer lab, yoga, workout room, book club, billiard club, bingo, bowling, shuffleboard, card clubs, Golden Olympics, water aerobics and group trips.
