Third-grader charged for carrying knife

COVINGTON — A third-grade Oak Hill Elementary School student has been arrested and charged in connection with having a knife at school and threatening to harm another student, according to the Newton County Sheriff's Office.

Public Information Officer Deputy Courtney Morrison said a student alerted a teacher early Thursday morning that the weapon was on the school campus.

"When the administration searched the 9-year-old male, a knife was located in his bookbag," Morrison said. "Our investigation did determine that he told other students he was going to harm a female fourth-grader."

Morrison said the youngster was charged with having a weapon on school property and making terroristic threats, both felonies.

He was released to the custody of his mother, Morrison said.

"The school notified authorities immediately and the student who had the weapon was isolated from the other students until we investigated," she said.

School authorities said the student would be disciplined according to the rules printed in the elementary school handbook.
