COVINGTON — Enrollment for the Montessori School of Covington is coming up, and area families have a chance to tour the facility.
The school is holding open house sessions throughout this month and next month for prospective families.
"Sometimes it is hard to explain exactly what a Montessori education consists of, so we like to provide an opportunity for parents to see a typical school day," said Jane Moon, director of the school. "During open house, families are able to tour the school, meet the teachers and administrators and observe the children working in class during a regular school day, as well as obtain a packet of information that includes Dr. Montessori and her methodology, tuition rates, an application and a school calendar. We share information regarding our program and curriculum and also are available for questions."
The multi-level facility, which is located at 4108 Summers St. in Covington in the Clark's Grove neighborhood, houses preschool through middle school grades.
In addition to academics, the school offers traditional extracurricular programs like art, music, foreign language and physical education, as well as community service and organic gardening classes. The school also features an after-school program, after school piano lessons, a summer camp and a Girl Scout troop.
As part of the 100-year-old Montessori methodology, the school bases lessons on scientific observation and emphasizes life skills and peaceful interpersonal relationships. It offers multi-aged classrooms, hands-on learning, individualized instruction, the ability for children to discover and experiment and the focus on the importance of respect for self, others and the environment, Moon said.
Open house times are scheduled from 9 to 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 7 and 14; Thursday, Dec. 9; and every Tuesday and Thursday in January. Options are available for families who are not able to visit during those times.
"We welcome families to stop by the school any time for a tour between the hours of 9 a.m. and 2:30 p.m., and then we can set up a time for them to observe their child's grade level classroom along with scheduling a child interview," Moon said.
Current families are able to re-enroll by March, and open enrollment will be held throughout the year for new families, Moon said.
