Woman charged in '07 death of baby

COVINGTON — A former Covington resident faces murder charges in connection with the death of her 5-week-old baby nearly three years ago, according to the Newton County Sheriff's Office.

Lt. Tyrone Oliver said Quanitta Yvette Turner, 25, of 2366 Green Forrest Drive, Decatur, has been charged with murder, felony murder, concealment of a death and cruelty to children in the first degree in connection with the Nov. 19, 2007, death of her daughter at a home on Friedman Drive in The Falls subdivision.

Oliver said the woman initially reported that she was sleeping with the baby in her bed and had accidentally rolled over on her during the night.

"The baby was still alive and crying, but went back to sleep. She (the mother) fell back asleep and woke up around 8:30 a.m. and found the baby not to be breathing," Oliver said.

The mother called 911 and EMS responded and transported the baby to Newton Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.

Oliver said an autopsy was performed, but the cause of death was listed as "undetermined."

"There were signs that she suffocated, but they weren't sure why," Oliver said.

The NCSO Criminal Investigation Division recently began to look further into the case, Oliver said.

"We talked to Ms. Turner ... and during our investigation, it was disclosed that she, in fact, killed the 5-week-old baby," he said.

Oliver said the investigation is ongoing, but indications are that Turner will be the only party charged in the case.

"Other people lived at the residence, but she was the only one in the room at the time of the death," Oliver said. "It looks like she played the sole part in this."

Turner has no other children, Oliver said.
