East metro Bulldogs to expand Touchdown Club

CONYERS — The Georgia Touchdown Club of Rockdale is calling all east metro area Bulldogs to a special meeting Aug. 26 that will celebrate the 30th anniversary of the national championship Bulldogs team and usher in the expansion of the club.

Cyndi Evans, president of the Rockdale Club, said the club will kick off the 2010 football season by welcoming Bulldog fans from Newton County and McDonough to join with Rockdale as members of the newly formed East Metro Bulldog Touchdown Club.

Evans said the combined membership will be more substantial and able to draw more heavy-weight speakers.

"I think the university (of Georgia Athletic Association) had expressed some desire ... that we were getting too small and that the McDonough club was too small and that the Newton County club had disbanded, so they were encouraging us to try to combine with them," Evans said.

As evidence that an expanded membership will draw top-notch speakers, the Aug. 26 meeting will feature Frank Ros, who was captain of the 1980 national championship team, and Bulldogs strength and conditioning coach Joe Tereshinski.

"It's such a special thing, with Frank Ros and the 30th anniversary, and of course Coach T will know everything up-to-the-minute because he'll be walking right off the practice field to come to the meeting," Evans said.

The name change is meant to send a signal that all Bulldogs in the east metro area are welcome.

"What we want to do is re-energize the Bulldog Nation in our area and to make it not feel like we're ostracizing anybody. We want people to feel like they're welcome."

To add an extra measure of excitement, Evans said the Aug. 26 meeting will follow a tailgate theme, complete with tents, Redcoat Band music and tailgate fare — including fried chicken, potato salad, sub sandwiches — all served on red plates and cups.

"We're hoping that with this new name and making it like a tailgate party that it's going to make people feel really welcome and want to come," Evans added.

The first meeting of the East Metro Bulldog Touchdown Club will be held in the Carriage Room at the Georgia International Horse Park. The meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. with "Go Dogs" hour, followed by the tailgate dinner and speakers beginning at 7 p.m. An auction and free door prizes will be featured. Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for children under 12. Paid reservations are due by Monday, Aug. 23. Checks should be mailed to Georgia Touchdown Club of Rockdale, P.O. Box 81907, Conyers, Ga. 30013.
