MONTICELLO — Piedmont Academy recently began the 2010-11 school year with 314 students and a new playground.

The new school year started Thursday with 139 students in grades K4 through five, 80 students in middle school and 95 students in high school.

The school draws from an eight-county area. Jasper County represents 50 percent of the student body, Newton County represents 28 percent and Butts represents 18 percent, an increase from last year. Other counties represented include Rockdale, Putnam, Henry, Morgan and Walton.

More than 200 families make up the school's student body, including 24 new families. Twenty-three percent of this year's student body has alumni parents or grandparents.

In addition to new families, Piedmont also greeted this school year sporting a new playground and a repaved parking lot. The Grandparents' Club, along with a generous donation from alumna, country music singer Trisha Yearwood, and several other benefactors made the two improvements possible. Parents, alumni, students, faculty, staff and members of the community helped build the playground, working through the summer heat and humidity.

The school is led by Headmaster Tony Tanner and Director of Admissions Judy Nelson.

The independent, nonprofit school was founded in 1970. The school is accredited by the Georgia Accrediting Commission and is a member of the Georgia Independent School Association.
