"The story about the band students who got sick after being outside for a few minutes proves how out of shape our children are today. They need to get outside more. Walk somewhere or ride a bike. When I was a kid, many, many years ago, we walked or rode our bikes everywhere we went. Also not only were our school buses not air conditioned, but neither were our schools, our homes or our automobiles. We survived and so can you. The kids today and their parents are wimps!"
"Well, once again Mort Ewing has decided that he knows best what Newton County citizens need. Does he really believe that he should not give us freedom to choose what is best for our county. Does he really brandish that much power over the board that he can dictate what is best for all of Newton County? I for one live in his district and feel ashamed that he is the best we can do. There's got to be someone who truly has the good of our district in mind and not just his good ol' boy groups. Shame on JC. I truly thought he had the good of Newton County in mind. He, above everyone else, should know to let the people decide. But then again this is Newton County. ... "
"To Henderson and Ewing who voted against the liquor referendum because they both stated that they wanted public input. If you wanted the public's input then we should be voting on this issue in November. We don't need your arrogance or your ignorance; put it to a vote, that is how you get the public's input."
"I do not understand the resistance to progress in Newton County. The county is in debt and is having to raise taxes, fees, rates, etc. Yet, the BOC and residents refuse to take measures to attract business to our county. The schools are among the lowest of the lowest state in the U.S., yet those go unchanged. Thankfully, private schools are moving into our area to provide options for our children. The BOC refuses to take measures to bring in quality restaurants, department stores, bike trails, etc. If we could sell our house and move out of this county, we would, but with the decisions being made real estate continues to be less and less attractive to sell. So, we continue to drive to surrounding counties for sporting programs, indoor pools, recreational opportunities, shopping, and dining."
"I would like to say Sheriff Brown is doing a fine job, working with what he has. For those people who seem to rely on law enforcement to constantly solve your problems because you seem to make bad choices and the ones that are true victims of crime, get used to delayed response times to your calls for help. Maybe next time you will vote for a commission and commission chairman who have some common sense and who will step up and be a leader. To all the road deputies, remember your safety and going home to your family comes first. Keep up the good work."
"I decided to send the Newton Citizen an e-mail this week because I'm sick of reading the garbage liberals come up with. There was a citizen that wrote in, and I've heard other liberals trying to give Bill Clinton the credit for the prosperity of the '90s. You've got the wrong Bill. Bill Gates is the right Bill. He sold personal computers along with their software like hot cakes, and people that were responsible for creating and selling all kinds of cell phones were responsible for the prosperity of the '90s. Bill Clinton never took one dime of those taxes that were generated from that prosperity and put them toward paying down our deficit. Instead it was squandered. If that same prosperity would have been around when Reagan was president our deficit would have been paid down. Now these latest liberals are forcing health care down our throats. When people that can think for themselves say you shouldn't threaten to fine someone for not having health insurance because they're out of work. They say well if you don't have car insurance you get fined. Well guess what liberal, I can ride a bicycle. What's the choice with your health care plan? We either pay for it or get penalized. The next step is debtors prison I guess. They're called gulags by the way, and they didn't work in the Soviet Union. I'm a firm believer that people should have to pass a test before they can vote, and not every year, just once. That way people that think for themselves will be the only ones voting. This socialist welfare mess has got us here America, and we have a lot to clean up this November."
"These are possibly the five best sentences you'll ever read:
1. You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity, by legislating the wealth out of prosperity.
2. What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving.
3. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else.
4. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work, because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that my dear friend, is the beginning of the end of any nation.
5. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it."
"Many Newton citizens I have spoken to say they will not forgive county commissioners if they allow a drag strip built in our peaceful area. Revenue from this venue cannot pay for overworked deputies, the jail to house numerous reckless driving, DUI and drug bust arrests, but most of all the loss of peace of mind and health to so many neighboring families."
"Another one bites the dust. Popeye's has gone out of business. The people that are positioned to recruit retail to the county need to step their game up. Between our backwards-thinking county commissioners and a ineffective Chamber of Commerce it's no wonder commercial growth has been stagnant for the better part of a decade. When you're losing over half a billion dollars in revenue a year you do whatever is necessary to recoup it."
"Thanks (to the deputy) for being incredibly rude to us at Porterdale Elementary on the First Day of school. We drove to you and asked you where to park and you said 'you can't read the signs.' Hello, I would rather not park on the street on the first day of school with the high school traffic with our pre-K student, yes a 4-year-old. Nice to know that our tax dollars are hard at work."
"So, having a friend's father pass away several months ago, gives Mrs. Obama the right to spend thousands of dollars having a lavish vacation with 40 friends at the taxpayer's expense? Somehow, I think a Hallmark card and a ladies' night out would have been more appropriate."
"I see that Popeye's has boarded up and our commissioners still need a reason to let us vote on alcohol sales. Another business lost. Even though they didn't sell alcohol, we are still losing out. For a county our size and population we have nothing."
"OK losers, It's time to pick up your campaign signs. Now! You should receive a littering citation for every day that you leave your trash on the roadside."
"To the editor, Is there any information on the moron who attempted to drive across the new Turner Lake foot bridge?"
"I have just received word of the closing of Popeye's in Covington. I am very disappointed. We were regular customers and went there at least once and sometime twice a week. The staff knew what we wanted before we ordered and knew we always sat at the same table. I am so sorry if anyone has lost there job. Good luck."
"This is in reference to the approved building plan for an Islamic cultural center two blocks from Ground Zero. Newt and others say we should allow the completion of this project when there are Christian churches in Mecca. Who's leading and who's following? We're the land of freedom of religion. I don't care what Mecca is doing."
