Protesters fourth-grade student Sierra Stanley and Jackie Karp braved the rain Tuesday night and displayed signs outside of Alcovy High School to protest cutting middle school sports out of next year's Newton County School System's budget. Both Karp and Michelle Stanley, Sierra's mom who was also protesting, have seventh-grade sons who wrestle and play football. The auditorium was packed with almost every seat taken. During public comments, two students from Cousins and Indian Creek middle schools read letters they had written about how upset they were that their sports programs were going to be cut and received a huge ovation from the crowd. See Thursday's Newton Citizen for full coverage of the meeting.
