COVINGTON -- A 36-year-old Newton County man was in stable condition after he was shot at a neighbor's house early Sunday morning.
Lt. Tyrone Oliver said the Newton County Sheriff's Office was called to the Trelawney subdivision off Brown Bridge Road between 1:30 and 1:40 a.m. Sunday. Oliver said deputies went to the victim's residence, where they found him lying on the living room floor. According to the NCSO incident report, the victim had been shot in the abdomen.
Deputies learned that the victim had been at a barbecue at the nearby home of Jessie Whitaker, 43, 165 Trelawney Place, where the shooting occurred, Oliver said.
"Evidently, the two got into some kind of verbal altercation," Oliver said. "Mr. Whitaker produced a firearm, a handgun, and shot our victim."
Oliver said it was unclear what the argument was about.
"Our victim stated Mr. Whitaker thought he was disrespecting him, but what the verbal altercation was about and what was said are unknown," he said.
Oliver said the victim was able to walk back to his house.
"He was transported to an Atlanta hospital, where he was treated," Oliver said. "He did go through surgery and was in stable condition as of the following morning."
Whitaker was arrested and charged with aggravated assault, pointing a gun at another, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and possession of a firearm during commission of a felony. Oliver said Whitaker is on probation for a previous conviction.
