CONYERS - Students in Rockdale County are preparing for what soon will be an extended fall break.
Starting Thursday, students and teachers in Rockdale County Public Schools will be on holiday until Oct. 12.
On Thursday and Friday, students and teachers will not report to schools for what are now employee furlough days, as requested earlier this year by state officials looking for ways to cut school system budgets to make up for a shortfall. Originally, Thursday was an early release day for students and a teacher workday for teachers, and Friday was a student holiday and a professional learning day for teachers.
All RCPS central office buildings also will be closed Thursday and Friday because of the furlough days.
After the furlough break, students and teachers will continue a school holiday for fall break, which is scheduled for Oct. 5 through 9.
Additionally, the central office will be closed on Oct. 5, the first day of fall break. For the remainder of fall break, Oct. 6 through 9, the RCPS administrative offices will be open to the public from 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m.
During fall break, the student registration office on West Avenue will be closed Oct. 5 and will be open to the public from 7:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. Oct. 6 through 9.
Due to fall break being scheduled for the second week of October, when the Rockdale County Board of Education normally meets for a monthly work session, the school board plans to hold its monthly work session Oct. 15. Its regular session monthly meeting will be Oct. 22. Both meetings begin at 7 p.m. in the board room at the central office administrative complex, which is located at 954 N. Main St. in Olde Town Conyers.
Students and staff will report back to their schools and offices on Monday, Oct. 12, when normal business hours will resume for RCPS.
The next student holiday for RCPS is Thanksgiving break, which is scheduled from Nov. 23 through 27.
