CONYERS - Clowns and country music kick off nine days of attractions this weekend at the sixth annual Rockdale County Fair at the Georgia International Horse Park.
The fair opened Friday and continues through Oct. 4. Hours are Monday through Friday from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from noon to 11 p.m.
Organizers have three special events for fair patrons planned this year. This weekend's headline is Colgate Country Showdown where aspiring bands compete for $1,000 and to advance to the competition's state finals.
Eventually, regional finalists will perform on the stage of historic Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, Tenn., for $100,000 and the title of Best New Act in Country Music.
A demonstration of Extreme Bull Riding is planned for Oct. 2., and Oct. 3. Gate admission to the fair will include Extreme Bull Riding, which features bulls from the Professional Bull Riding circuit.
The Miss Rockdale County Fair beauty pageant returns this year. The pageant will be held on Oct. 4. Winners will be crowned in several age categories and become eligible for the Miss Georgia contest.
Other events planned throughout the fair include church choir concerts, musical entertainment and midway rides and games.
Tickets for admission are $3, except for the weekend of Oct. 2-3, when they will be at $6. Admission for midway rides is separate from gate admission. All live entertainment is free with gate admission.
