COVINGTON - The Georgia State Patrol has confirmed the death of a Newton County man in the early morning hours Friday in a Butts County traffic crash.
Ryan Jeffares, 23, was probability killed on impact, according to GSP spokesman Gordy Wright. The crash occurred around 5:10 a.m. on Ga. Highway 36, a two-lane highway, about two-tenths of a mile from Cherokee Drive approximately 71/2 miles out of Jackson. "Mr. Jeffares was driving a 1992 Oldsmobile Cutlass and for unknown reasons the right side of his vehicle ran off the roadway. He over-corrected, came back on the roadway and collided with a 1993 GM Sierra pickup being driven by 22-year-old Michael Stegall of Jackson. Stegall was transported to the Medical Center of Central Georgia with serious injuries including broken bones, internal injuries and head trauma. The accident is being investigated by the GSP post in Griffin. Jeffares worked as a corrections officer at the Al Burrus Correctional Training Center and Boot Camp at the Georgia Public Training Center in Forsyth, according to Butts County Sheriff Gene Pope.
