Tour of homes planned

SOCIAL CIRCLE - Owners of historic homes in Social Circle are opening their doors to visitors soon for the annual fall Tour of Homes.

From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, guests are invited to Social Circle's fall Tour of Homes, Looking Forward to the Past.

"All of the homes in the tour are listed on the national registry," said Dena Johnston, tour coordinator. "The Historic Preservation Society of Social Circle encourages the preservation of old homes."

This is estimated to be the 28th year of the tour, which showcases seven homes in the downtown Social Circle area that were built in the late 1800s to early 1900s.

This year, homes include the Will T. Knox-Ewing, Upshaw-Henry, Gresham-Dalton, Stanton-Hornsby, Robinson-Hollis, Gunter Hall and the Myrtles House, which is the office of the Blue Willow Inn. This year's tour also include a bonus, the Hester House, which now serves as Social Circle City Hall.

On the self-guided tour, guests can drop in any of the homes between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. When they arrive at the home, the owners and hosts will greet them to show them around the home and discuss its history.

"Not only will they see unique homes, but they will also see wonderful collections of art work, china and crystal," Johnston said.

The homes serve as either offices or personal living quarters; the Upshaw-Henry home also doubles as a new funeral home.

Some of the homes are new to the tour and others might have been on a previous tour but have recently incurred major renovations.

Johnston also encourages tour guests, who may be local or from out of town and even out of state, to enjoy lunch at local restaurants and shop at local shops during the tour.

"Make a nice, fun day of it," she said.

Tickets are $16 in advance, $15 each for groups of 10 or more or $18 on the day of the tour. Sales benefit the maintenance and upkeep of Gunter Hall, which is the headquarters of the historic society and is fully furnished with period furniture and available for weddings and meetings.

Tickets can be purchased at Gunter Hall or online at www.historicsocialcircle.com.
