COVINGTON - Alcovy's defense did what it needed to behind pitcher Dallas Hardin as the Lady Tigers remained unbeaten in Region 4-AAAA with their 4-0 win over Griffin on Wednesday.
The win gives Alcovy a perfect 5-0 in region play and keeps them tied with GACA Coaches Softball Poll Class AAAA No. 7-ranked Ola.
Hardin finished the game with five strikeouts while walking four and giving up two hits. The win was especially sweet for Hardin after dealing with Griffin last season.
"She had some walks. That means she's trying too hard to throw it by them. She threw a little harder than normal. I think that's because of the adrenaline going because of that game last year," Alcovy coach Casey Bates said. "We were playing down there and we jumped out to a lead and they came back then Dallas walked in the winning run.
"Dallas did a good job. She didn't have a lot of strikeouts but we played some good defense behind her."
Reaching first on their own for Griffin were Bri McDaniel and Alex Smith.
The Lady Bears had one real chance to score and that came in the sixth inning. With one out, Griffin had runners on second and third base. But Alcovy's defense was able to keep the runners from advancing, keeping the shutout intact.
The Lady Tigers took the lead in the bottom of the first inning when Morgan Mobley knocked Lakeiyah Sorrells in.
While Alcovy's defense kept Griffin off the board, they were unable to add their lead until the fourth.
After a Marie Peck RBI single plated Chelsea Murphy, who reached third on a triple, courtesy runner Samantha Cronan and Melody Belcher scored on wild pitches by sophomore pitcher Allison Waters to add to their tally.
Also getting hits for the Lady Tigers were Kelsey Sweat, Belcher and Hardin.
"That was a game a lot of our kids wanted. We had a hard time beating them last year. We played them four times and they beat us three times in a row, including twice in the region tournament," Bates said. "When Dallas is on the mound and we're playing good defense, we've got a chance, no matter what the score is."
