A number of cross country runners had a successful day at last weekend's Tiger Trail Classic at Alcovy High School.
The Newton boys won the team title by placing all seven runners in the top 20. Senior Jason Moffitt and junior Jamal Green finished second and third with times of 19:13.33 and 19:17.44, respectively. The Rams had three other top-10 placers, including junior Matt Knight (seventh at 19:54.92), senior Will Martin (ninth, 20:14.69) and senior Carl Collins (10th, 20:24.45).
Alcovy finished second and also had all seven runners finish in the top 20. Junior Dominique Brown won the boy's race, running in 18:45.03, more than 27 seconds ahead of Moffitt. Senior Joshua Holcombe (fifth at 19:44.72) and junior Ahmad Crawford (sixth, 19:45.14) helped pace the Tigers.
Salem struggled to a fourth-place team finish, but Dontavius Wright finished fourth with a time of 19:20.39. Two other runners finished in the top 20 - Roy Cooley (16th, 21:18.66) and Robert Williams (19th, 22:18.81).
On the girl's side, Alcovy was a rude host, winning the event with all five runners finishing in the top 10. Senior Makiala Houseworth finished third (26:08.08), while junior Katie Childress (fifth, 28:43.44), sophomore Matresa Flowers (sixth, 29:19.61), senior Briana Pace (ninth, 31:22.28) and senior Nakia Mason (10th, 32:23.91) all ran well.
Newton had the top-two finishers in juniors Taviana Nolley, who won the individual title in 25:56.72, and runner-up Desiree Hines (26:01.47). Junior Candy Penaloza placed fourth (28:29.53) to help the Rams finish second.
